Literacy Initiative is Focus for Johnson City Schools

Nestled in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee, Johnson City School District promotes its mission to enable all students to achieve academic excellence in learning, social responsibility, and self worth. The school district is comprised of 7,200 students enrolled in 11 schools. In 2007-08, 43.5% of these students were classified as economically disadvantaged and 25.2% are Title 1 students.
 

In 2005 the district began a Literacy Initiative with high goals. One of their primary goals was that all students meet AYP in reading, language arts, and writing. The district partnered with Lindamood-Bell to help struggling readers and is now in its third year of implementing a comprehensive model of professional development in language and literacy development. Currently, eight of the ten schools in the district receive ongoing coaching and professional development from two district instructional leaders who were certified by Lindamood-Bell. Additionally, a Lindamood-Bell is providing project management and consulting throughout the district. 

Last year, 300 students received intensive intervention. In addition, most of the schools are also providing literacy instruction in the regular classroom setting to assure that all students are given the resources to read and comprehend on grade level.
