Exemplary Title 1 School Leads the Way in Brooksville, Florida Hernando County Schools in Brooksville, Florida partnered with Lindamood-Bell in 2003. Since then, 225 district teachers and paraprofessionals have received extensive professional development in language and literacy development. Thirteen teachers have been certified by Lindamood-Bell, and that number is expected to grow by the end of 2008-09. |
Four of the district schools have a comprehensive, school-wide implementation of the Lindamood-Bell model. All four schools received an A on the state report card. One of these schools, Brooksville Elementary, is leading the way and closing the achievement gap. Recipient of the DOE 5-STAR school award for the 6th year in a row, Brooksville Elementary continues to set the pace for literacy instruction within the district. This year, Brooksville was recognized as being an "Exemplary School" in the area of reading and reading practices by the Just Read Florida office. Representatives from Just Read visited Brooksville along with other schools in the district, including Spring Hill Elementary to view Lindamood-Bell classroom and intervention groups.

| During the 2007-08 school year, professional development was also expanded to help meet the needs of students with autism. Many ESE teachers and speech-language pathologists are providing instruction in the Talkies program in their classrooms and in therapy sessions. Hernando County Schools continue to see that this special population of students receives effective and potentially life-changing instruction. |
